🎣 Fishing Reports & Conditions

  • Buskin River sockeye — The run is building! Early weir counts started around 25 fish (10–15% of the expected run) and numbers should be climbing quickly. Based on prior seasons the daily bag limit often increases as more fish arrive. Peak fishing typically hits mid-to-late June.
  • Saltwater king salmon — Decent action at Inner & Outer Humpback Rocks and the Fingers in Chiniak Bay. Bag limit is 1/day by Emergency Order. Westside of Kodiak closed through June 30.
  • Halibut — Picking up. Focus on 150 ft or shallower around Chiniak Bay, Long Island, Kalsin Reef, and Cape Chiniak.
  • Dolly Varden — Cruising local beaches and nearshore waters: Pillar Creek, Mission Beach, Chiniak Beaches.
  • Rockfish — Good in the usual spots. New 2026 regs: single-species limit of 2/day north of Outlet Cape & Cape Ikolik.
  • Salmon sharks spotted this spring — legal to harvest (annual limit 2).

🐻 Bear Viewing

  • Frazer Lake / Dog Salmon Creek — Season open (Jun 6–Aug 28). Sockeye arriving at the fish pass, bears showing up early! 5–10 bears typically visible at the falls.
  • Live bear cam active at Frazer Fish Pass (Starlink-powered!) via USFWS Kodiak NWR.
  • Getting there: ~50-min floatplane + ¾-mile walk. Book through Kingfisher Aviation (907-486-5155) or local air taxis.
  • Peak bear viewing is July–September — but early sightings are happening now. Book ahead!

🛶 Seasonal Activity Highlights

  • Whale watching — Humpback, fin & minke whales active (May–Sep). Best shore spots: Miller Point at Ft. Abercrombie, Surfer Beach, Fossil Beach. Charter tours available.
  • Kayaking — Peak season in Pasagshak Bay and Chiniak Bay. Guided tours available.
  • Puffins — Horned & tufted puffins nesting on offshore rocks through summer.
  • Sea otters & Steller sea lions — Easily spotted around Near Island, the harbor & kelp beds.
  • Hiking — Fort Abercrombie, Termination Point, Near Island Trail, Pillar Mountain all in great shape.
